Your first day in Bangkok: a plan that survives jet lag

What to do on day one when you have flown overnight, what to skip, and the timing that avoids Bangkok’s worst heat and traffic.

The mistake on day one is over-planning. Bangkok is hot, the traffic is real, and a jet-lagged afternoon at the Grand Palace is memorable for the wrong reasons.

The reliable pattern: something close to your hotel in the morning, a long air-conditioned lunch, then the river in the late afternoon when the light is good and the heat has dropped.

A day that works

MorningOne temple near your hotel, early. Wat Pho opens at 8:00 and is calmer before 10:00.
MiddayEat indoors. This is the hottest part of the day and the traffic is at its worst.
Late afternoonThe river. Cross by ferry to Wat Arun for the light, then eat on the Thonburi side.
EveningA dinner cruise or a night market — not both.

Questions

Should I book the Grand Palace in advance?

It is a walk-in attraction, but go at opening. Midday queues are long and the heat is brutal.

Is the river ferry easy?

Yes. The cross-river ferries at Tha Tien are cheap and frequent.
