Ayutthaya in a day: what the tour actually covers
The former capital is 80km north of Bangkok. Here is what the full-day tour includes, where it collects you, and the three details that catch people out.
Why Ayutthaya, and why in one day
Ayutthaya was the Siamese capital for four centuries before it was sacked in 1767. What remains is a walled city of brick temples and stupas, listed by UNESCO, and it is close enough to Bangkok to see in a single day — which is exactly why nearly every visitor does it that way.
The trade-off is a long day: roughly eleven and a half hours door to door on this tour. That is the honest cost of seeing it without moving hotels.

Our view
Worth it if you want the history and do not mind a long day in a vehicle. If you would rather keep the day short, the evening alternative in Bangkok is a river cruise rather than a temple run — different mood, two hours instead of eleven.
We list this operator because the itinerary is specific and the cancellation terms are standard 24-hour. We do not claim it is the cheapest Ayutthaya tour in Bangkok; we have not compared every operator, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Questions
Is Ayutthaya doable by public transport?
Yes — trains run from Hua Lamphong to Ayutthaya in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. It is cheaper and slower, and you arrange the temples yourself on arrival. This tour is the opposite trade: more money, no planning.
How hot is it?
Hot. The ruins have almost no shade, so the tour front-loads the outdoor stops. Carry water, a hat and sun cream even though water is provided.
What happens if it rains?
The tour runs in rain. Only the operator can cancel, and if they do you are refunded in full regardless of the 24-hour window.
