Similan Islands: Season, Boats and What to Expect

Boat crossing to the Similan Islands
Boat crossing to the Similan Islands

The Similans are the best snorkelling in Thailand and they are closed for roughly half the year. That single fact decides most trips — and it is the thing most guides bury.

Why they close

The national park closes to let the reef and the turtle nesting recover. During that window no tour boats run, whatever a booking site may show you for those dates.

The day, realistically

  • Early pickup from your Phuket hotel, usually before 07:00
  • Speedboat crossing of roughly 90 minutes to two hours, depending on the pier
  • Two or three snorkel stops plus time on the main beach and a viewpoint
  • Back on Phuket by late afternoon

The crossing is the part that decides whether you enjoy the day — it can be rough.

What the price covers

Our listing is ฿3,120 per person: speedboat, snorkelling gear, lunch and hotel pickup. The national park fee is collected separately at the pier, as it is for every operator — nobody includes a government charge in the headline price unless they say so explicitly.

Who should skip it

If you get seasick, the crossing is long and exposed. If you have one day in Phuket and want to see Phi Phi, pick one — doing both in two days is exhausting and expensive.

Questions people ask

Can I go in July?

No. The park is closed, and any listing that sells it then is selling something else.

Is it better than Phi Phi?

For snorkelling, yes. For scenery and convenience, Phi Phi wins.

Do I need to book ahead?

In peak season, yes — boats fill days in advance.
