Phuket or Krabi: Which Coast Fits Your Trip

They are 150 km apart and people treat them as interchangeable. They are not: one is an island with an airport and a city, the other is a province of cliffs and beaches with no city centre worth the name.

The comparison that matters
| Phuket | Krabi | |
|---|---|---|
| Airport | On the island, 45 min to Patong | 15 km from Krabi town, 30 min to Ao Nang |
| Base | Patong, Kata, Karon, Rawai | Ao Nang, Railay, Krabi town |
| Beach style | Long, developed, busy | Cliffs, small bays, fewer hotels |
| Boat trips | Phi Phi, Similan, Phang Nga | Four Islands, Phi Phi, Hong Islands |
| Evening | Nightlife, restaurants, malls | Quieter, beach bars, night market |
| Cost | Higher for hotels and taxis | Lower for the same standard |
Choose Phuket if…
- You want a direct flight and no onward transfer
- You are travelling with people who want nightlife and restaurants
- You plan to dive the Similan Islands — most boats leave from the north of the island
Choose Krabi if…
- You want cliffs and quiet beaches over resort strips
- You are heading to Railay, which has no road access at all
- You want the same island trips for less money

What people get wrong
Booking Phuket for a Phi Phi trip and then discovering the boat leaves from a pier an hour north. And booking Krabi for a “beach holiday” without realising Ao Nang is a road, not a beach town — the beaches are on the islands.
Questions people ask
Can I do both?
Yes. Ferry or speedboat between them takes 2–4 hours; many people split a week.
Which has better beaches?
Krabi’s are more dramatic; Phuket’s are longer and easier to reach from a hotel.
Which is cheaper?
Krabi, for hotels and food at the same standard.
