Bangkok dinner cruises: how to pick the right boat

Two hours on the Chao Phraya, two departure times, one pier. What this cruise includes, and what decides whether you enjoy it.

What a dinner cruise actually is

You board at Asiatique, eat while the boat runs a loop of the river past the lit-up temples and the Grand Palace, and you are back on the pier two hours later. It is not a tour — there is no guiding to speak of — it is a meal with a moving view.

That is worth knowing before you book, because the thing that separates a good evening from a disappointing one is rarely the food. It is the departure time and the seat.

Departure time is the real decision

The later boat finishes at ten, which is past the point where most families with young children are still enjoying themselves. The earlier one finishes at half nine and gets you off the pier while the night market is still busy.

Both run the same stretch of river, so the view does not change. What changes is how tired you are by dessert.

What is not included, and what to check

Soft drinks are covered. Alcohol is not, and is charged on board at hotel prices.

Getting to Asiatique is your own arrangement — the pier is reachable by the BTS to Saphan Taksin and then the free shuttle boat, which is the cheapest way and the one most visitors miss.

If you are booking for a date you cannot move, book early: the boats sell out on weekends and around holidays, and instant confirmation only means the booking is accepted, not that seats are infinite.

Our view

This is a good evening if you want the river at night without organising anything. It is a poor choice if you want to actually see the temples close up — the boat passes them, it does not stop.

We have not eaten on every boat in Bangkok and we will not rank them. What we can tell you is what this product includes, when it leaves, and how to get to the pier.

Questions

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, and the earlier departure is the easier one. There is no minimum age stated for this product, but check the operator’s current terms at checkout.

What if it rains?

It runs. The boat is covered; the open deck is not. Rain is not grounds for a refund on this product.

Can I cancel?

For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. Inside that window the operator charges, unless they cancel the sailing.
