How to spot an ethical elephant sanctuary
The test is simple: does the elephant choose what happens next? If it’s carrying a person, it doesn’t.
The short version
No riding, no shows, no paintingthese require the animal to perform on command.
Ask how many elephants and how much land. More elephants than keepers is a red flag.
Good sanctuaries limit group size and let you observe rather than interact.
Watch for chains, hooks and ‘mahout shows’none belong in a sanctuary.
